Stift Klosterneuburg
Since the monastery's founding, the Augustinian Canons of Klosterneuburg
have viewed it as their duty to foster scholarship and art. As
a result of their 900 years of research and collecting activities,
the monastery is home to a series of notable artworks, from the
world-famous Verdun Altar from the Middle Ages to magnificent Baroque
works through to modern painting.
Numerous artistic treasures and the impressive architectural heritage
can be viewed via the thematic tours through the monastery or by
visiting the monastery museum. In addition to tours and exhibitions,
the monastery presents specially conceived workshops for adults,
school classes and children.
Highlights:
The Romanesque monastery church,
the Gothic cloister with its Chapel of St. Leopold, the world-famous
Verdun Altar with its 51 magnificent enamel panels, the magnificent
Imperial Chambers of Charles VI's unfinished residence, the monastery
museum's many precious exhibits—Klosterneuburg Monastery
is one of Austria's most rewarding attractions for culturally minded
tourists.
The monastery museum was founded during
the late 18th century by Provost Ambros Lorenz as one of the first
institutions of its kind. Its collections encompass principle works
of painting, sculpture, and handicrafts from the Middle Ages to
the modern era.
The series "Art on Sunday" offers intensive engagement
with the museum's artistic treasures. The focal points of the roughly
two-hour presentations are formed by several notable exhibits which
are examined in terms of their artistic aspects as well as placed
in their original political, historical and social contexts.
Among the most significant items of the museum's inventory are
the Mercury statue by Raphael Donner, a large collection of ivory
carvings and numerous views of the monastery from the 19th and
20th centuries, among them early works by Egon Schiele. The most
precious objects, however, are the Babenberg family tree and works
by Rueland Frueauf the Younger.
